HOW A COIN IS STRUCK?
The coins in India are struck by a pair of dies. Both the dies contains the mirror image of the obverse and reverse of a coin.HOW THE DIES ARE MADE?
- Firstly, an artist makes a large plaster model of the
coin.
- The plaster model is than coated with rubber.
- The rubber model is then used to make epoxy
galvano.
- Then a machine takes some time to make the image on the
top of steel cylinder called a MASTER HUB.
- The design on the Master Hub is raised and is NOT a
mirror impression.
- Now by this Master Hub, few MASTER DIES are
made.
- The Master Die is a tool which later produces the
actual die.
- Then, these Master Dies are send to a hubbing press.
- Here the master die is placed above a blank steel rod.
- With great pressure the face of the master die is
lowered and squeezed into the steel rod leaving the impression of the image
on the master die on the face of the steel rod.
- The new steel rod is known as a WORKING HUB.
- And this Working Hub has a raised MIRROR image
of the coin.
- Then the working hubs are put through the same process
to form the WORKING DIES.
- These working dies are the actual dies which will
strike coins.
The dies in India are made in a complex manner.
